What really sucks is that they had this guy on their radar but either stopped tracking him or let him go. Expect concrete barriers everywhere now. You think we’d have learned our lesson after Nice.

Judging by recent history, I don’t know if the authorities are capable of learning a lesson. The only question about future events is when, not if.

Our Berlin office is 2 blocks from the attack, was a pretty huge scramble to figure out if everyone was ok.

Great photos, btw, I like your vertical perspective and I’m partial to old stone works myself. Thanks for sharing

Just at the right edge of the picture between the antenna and the funnel you can see the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche located at the Breitscheidplatz. So I live about a mile away.
I’m mentioning this because it might add some weight to my point:
Yes, the suspect was on the radar of the authorities and there was a lawsuit against him. He was apparently charged for preparing “a seditious action” or whatever the correct English term is. Yet the legal action was shut down.
He didn’t do anything and/or they weren’t able to prove any actual preparation to commit an attack.

In this case the authorities had the right hunch, but he was let go. Yet I don’t want to call this a mistake. When there is no proof a person is not guilty. That’s it.
And I also don’t want to live in a society were you are constantly on the radar and people are suspects for crimes that didn’t even happen.
It’s a fine line between security and oppression.

I feel for the victims, their families and friends. What happenend is terrible!

But more cameras, more surveillance and more legal means to target people aren’t the answer - and won’t necessarily prevent attacks like this either.

By changing our laws, behaviour and our attitude towards other human beings the terrorists are winning. So I hope my fellow Germans are strong enough to resist those urges and to resist revenge against people who didn’t do anything wrong. Not just claiming to stand for freedom and democracy but living it and - sadly - sometimes accepting the consequences is real courage and strength.
